Custom Yard Signs
Custom Yard Signs in Black Mountain
A yard sign has one job: to be read from a moving vehicle. That constraint shapes everything about how it is designed, produced, and mounted. The text has to be large enough to read at 25 to 35 miles per hour. The material has to survive rain, wind, and sun for months at a time. And the size has to fit a standard wire stake so it can be pushed into the ground and stay upright.
Precision Graphics has been producing signage for businesses in Black Mountain and Western North Carolina since 1998 . Our customers have ordered signs for their businesses and been pleased with the results . We help you choose the right size, material, and layout for a yard sign that does what it is supposed to do: get noticed from the road.
When Yard Signs Make Sense
Yard signs are a specific tool for a specific kind of visibility. They are not permanent signage and they are not meant to be read up close. They are for short-to-mid-term outdoor display where people are passing by.
Real estate
“For Sale” and “Open House” signs are the most common yard sign use case. The standard format allows a property address, agent name, phone number, and a few key details to be visible from the street .
Business promotion and hiring
Contractors, landscapers, restaurants, and local services use yard signs to advertise specials, announce “Now Hiring,” or simply remind passersby that they exist .
Political campaigns
Campaign signs are a seasonal staple. They need to be produced quickly, in quantity, and in a size that fits standard stakes for residential and commercial placement .
Events and directions
Festivals, fundraisers, and community events use yard signs for directional arrows, parking instructions, or general promotion. Smaller rider signs can be added below a main sign for specific details .
Recognition and celebration
Graduation signs, birthday announcements, and achievement recognition signs have become common uses for short-term yard display .
If you need a banner for a building facade or a rigid sign for a storefront, other services may fit better. Yard signs are specifically for ground-mounted, stake-supported display.
Standard Yard Sign Sizes and Materials
The yard sign industry has settled on a few standard specifications. Understanding them helps you order the right product.
The standard size: 18″ x 24″
This is the default for real estate listings, political campaigns, and contractor advertising. It provides enough space for a legible headline at 4 to 5 inch letters, a phone number or URL, and a logo, with comfortable margins. It fits standard H-wire stakes and is readable from a car at typical residential speeds .
Larger sizes: 24″ x 36″
For commercial properties and arterial roads where viewing distances are greater, 24″ x 36″ signs offer more visibility. These are also used for political signs in higher-traffic areas .
Smaller sizes: 12″ x 18″
Occasionally used for directional signs or where space is limited. The smaller format fits less information and is best for simple messages .
Material: corrugated plastic
Yard signs are made from corrugated polypropylene, a lightweight, weather-resistant plastic. The standard thickness is 4mm, which is appropriate for most short-term uses. For longer-term outdoor display (6+ weeks or multi-season use), 6mm material extends the lifespan . The material is waterproof and resists fading when printed with UV-cured inks .
Single-sided vs. double-sided
Single-sided signs are standard for most yard sign applications. Double-sided signs are used when the sign will be visible from two directions—for example, on a corner lot or at an intersection .
Stakes
Standard yard signs are designed to fit H-wire stakes that slide into the flutes of the corrugated plastic. The stakes are typically sold with the signs or available separately .
If you have a specific size or material in mind, ask when you request a quote. Availability depends on current supply.
Designing a Yard Sign That Works from the Road
A yard sign is not a poster. It is not read at arm’s length. The design has to account for speed, distance, and the brief moment a driver or passenger has to notice it.
The headline is everything.
At 18″ x 24″, you have room for a short, large headline and a few supporting details. The most important information—the business name, the service, or the offer—should be the largest element. Everything else is secondary .
Keep text minimal.
A phone number, a website, or a short phrase. That is about all a passing driver can absorb. A yard sign crowded with small text is a yard sign that will not be read.
High contrast.
Dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background. The colors need to separate clearly at a distance. Low-contrast designs disappear in outdoor light.
Vector artwork.
Logos and text should be supplied as vector files (such as .AI, .EPS, or .PDF) so they scale cleanly to sign size. A low-resolution image that looks fine on a screen will look blurry when enlarged to 18″ x 24″ or larger.
Bleed and safe margins.
If your design extends to the edge, you will need bleed so the color does not stop short when the sign is trimmed. Important text should stay inside a safe margin so it is not cut off.
How the Yard Sign Process Works
You do not need to have every detail decided before you contact us. Here is what the process generally involves.
1. You tell us about the sign and its purpose. What is the sign for? Where will it be placed? How long does it need to last? How many do you need? Share any design files or describe what you want the sign to say.
2. We discuss size, material, and quantity. The standard 18″ x 24″ at 4mm is the starting point for most projects. We will help you choose options that fit your intended use and budget.
3. Your artwork is prepared. Vector files work best for yard signs because they scale cleanly. If you have a print-ready file, we will check that it meets the specifications. If not, we can discuss what adjustments are needed.
4. You approve a proof. Before we print, you will see a proof showing how the sign will look. This is your chance to check the layout, the text size, and the overall readability.
5. We print and prepare your order. Once approved, we produce the signs and have them ready for pickup at our shop in Black Mountain.
What Affects Cost and Timeline
Yard sign pricing depends on several factors. We do not publish fixed prices because every project is different, but these are the considerations that matter:
-
Size — An 18″ x 24″ sign costs less than a 24″ x 36″ sign.
-
Material thickness — 4mm is standard; 6mm costs more but lasts longer.
-
Sides — Single-sided is standard; double-sided adds cost.
-
Quantity — Per-sign cost generally decreases with larger orders.
-
Stakes — If stakes are needed, confirm whether they are included or sold separately.
-
Artwork readiness — A print-ready file moves through production faster than one that needs adjustment.
-
Deadline — If you need signs by a specific date, let us know early.
When you request a quote, we will give you a clear breakdown based on your specific project and timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard size for a yard sign?
The standard size is 18″ x 24″ at 4mm corrugated plastic. This size fits a legible headline, a phone number or URL, and a logo, and it is readable from a car at typical residential speeds .
How long do corrugated plastic yard signs last?
At 4mm thickness with UV-cured inks, a yard sign typically holds up for 6 to 12 months outdoors under normal weather conditions. For longer-term use, 6mm material extends the lifespan to 12 to 18 months or more .
Do the signs come with stakes?
Stakes are typically available with yard signs, but whether they are included or sold separately depends on the order. Ask when you request a quote .
Can you print on both sides of the sign?
Yes. Double-sided printing is available. Single-sided is standard for most yard sign uses, but double-sided makes sense for corner lots or locations where the sign will be seen from two directions .
What file format should I send for yard signs?
A print-ready PDF is ideal. AI and EPS files also work well. If you only have a JPEG or PNG, the image may need to be high resolution enough to print clearly at sign size. For an 18″ x 24″ sign, that means a minimum resolution of 2700 x 3600 pixels .
How long does yard sign production take?
Turnaround time depends on the quantity, material, and our current schedule. When you request a quote, we can give you a realistic timeline based on your project and deadline.
