Laser Engraving
Laser Engraving in Black Mountain
Laser engraving creates a permanent mark by using a focused beam of light to remove a thin layer of the material’s surface. Unlike printing, which applies ink on top of an object, engraving goes into the object itself. The result is a design, text, or image that cannot peel, fade, or wash away—because it is part of the material, not something sitting on top of it.
Precision Graphics has been serving businesses and individuals in Black Mountain and Western North Carolina since 1998. We work with you to choose the right item, prepare your artwork for engraving, and understand what the finished result will look like before production begins.
What Laser Engraving Can Do for You
Laser engraving is a practical choice when you need a mark that lasts. It is used for recognition, personalization, identification, and decoration across a wide range of materials and items.
It is a good fit for:
-
Awards and recognition items — plaques, trophies, badges, and commemorative pieces for employees, volunteers, or achievement milestones
-
Personalized gifts — wooden boxes, cutting boards, drinkware, glassware, and leather items engraved with names, dates, or messages
-
Corporate and promotional items — branded pens, tumblers, portfolios, and tech accessories that carry your logo permanently
-
Signage and identification — engraved nameplates, room signs, desk plates, and equipment tags
-
Keepsakes and commemorative pieces — items marking a grand opening, anniversary, retirement, or special occasion
If your project involves apparel rather than hard goods, screen printing or embroidery would be the more appropriate service. And if you need printed materials on paper or cardstock, digital printing covers that category. Laser engraving is specifically for marking solid objects.
Materials and Items We Can Engrave
The laser engraving process works differently depending on the material. Some materials vaporize cleanly under the laser, leaving a crisp recessed mark. Others discolor or frost on the surface. Understanding which materials suit which effect helps you choose the right item for your project.
Wood and wood products
Wood engraves with excellent contrast, producing a dark, burned appearance against the lighter grain. It is one of the most popular materials for gifts, awards, and decorative items. Common wood items include plaques, boxes, cutting boards, coasters, and frames.
Glass and crystal
Laser engraving on glass produces a frosted white appearance rather than a dark mark. The surface is micro-fractured by the laser, creating a permanent etched effect. Glass awards, wine glasses, and decorative pieces are common projects.
Acrylic
Acrylic engraves with a frosted look similar to glass, though the contrast depends on the acrylic color and finish. Clear acrylic produces a visible frosted mark, while dark or colored acrylic may show a lighter engraving.
Coated metals
Bare metal is difficult to engrave with standard CO2 lasers, but coated metals—such as anodized aluminum or painted metal—engrave well because the laser removes the coating to reveal the contrasting material underneath. This makes engraved tumblers, pens, and metal tags practical.
Leather
Leather engraves with a dark, burned appearance that holds detail well. It is used for personalized wallets, belts, patches, and journal covers.
Stone and slate
Stone and slate engrave with a high-contrast mark, often light against dark or dark against light depending on the material. Coasters, tiles, and commemorative pieces are common applications.

How the Laser Engraving Process Works
You do not need to be a laser technician to get started. Here is what the process generally involves.
1. You tell us what you need engraved. Bring us the item (or tell us what item you are considering), along with the text, logo, or design you want applied. If you have a digital file, bring that as well.
2. We discuss material and design considerations. Not every design translates perfectly to every material. Fine lines may be lost on some surfaces. Certain materials produce different color results than others. We will talk through what to expect based on the specific item and design.
3. Your artwork is prepared for the laser. The design needs to be in a format the laser can interpret. Vector files (such as .AI, .EPS, or .PDF) are ideal because they define shapes and lines mathematically, which the laser follows precisely. If your artwork is a low-resolution image or a hand-drawn sketch, we may need to redraw or adjust it before engraving.
4. You approve a proof or mockup. Before the laser runs, you will see a representation of how the engraving will look on your chosen item. This is your chance to confirm spelling, layout, and placement.
5. We engrave and prepare your order. Once approved, we engrave your items and have them ready for pickup at our shop in Black Mountain.
What Affects Cost and Timeline
Laser engraving pricing depends on several factors. We do not publish fixed prices because each project is different, but these are the considerations that matter:
-
Item type and material — A small wooden coaster and a large glass award require different setup and handling.
-
Engraving area and complexity — A simple line of text takes less time than a detailed logo or a large graphic.
-
Quantity — Multiple identical items can be produced more efficiently than one-off pieces.
-
Artwork preparation — If your design needs to be redrawn or converted, that adds time.
-
Item sourcing — If you need us to supply the items (such as blank plaques or tumblers), that affects cost compared to bringing your own.
When you request a quote, we will give you a clear breakdown based on your specific project and timeline.
What to Bring When You Request a Quote
Having a few details ready helps us give you an accurate quote and a realistic timeline.
-
The item you want engraved, or a description of what you are considering
-
Your design or text (a digital file, a sketch, or a description)
-
The quantity
-
Placement preference if the item has multiple possible engraving areas
-
Your deadline or event date
If you are unsure what item to choose or how your design will translate, that is fine. We can help you work through the options.
Frequently Asked Questions
What file format works best for laser engraving?
Vector files such as .AI, .EPS, or .PDF are ideal because they define clean lines and shapes that the laser can follow precisely. High-resolution images can also work for some projects, though they may require more preparation. If you only have a low-resolution file, contact us to discuss options.
Can you engrave items I already own?
Often, yes, depending on the material and shape. Bring the item by the shop or describe it when you request a quote, and we can advise whether it can be engraved safely and effectively.
Will the engraving be a different color than the material?
It depends on the material. Wood typically burns dark. Glass and clear acrylic frost to a lighter, whitish appearance. Coated metals reveal the underlying metal color. We can explain what to expect for your specific item.
How deep is laser engraving?
The depth varies by material and laser settings, but it is generally a shallow surface mark rather than a deep cut. The permanence comes from removing or altering the surface layer, not from cutting deeply into the object.
Can you engrave text and logos together?
Yes. Text, logos, and simple graphics can be combined in a single engraving design. We will help you arrange the layout so it reads clearly on the item.
How long does laser engraving take?
Turnaround time depends on the complexity of the design, the material, the quantity, and our current schedule. When you request a quote, we can give you a realistic timeline based on your project and deadline.
