Banner Printing
Banner Printing in Black Mountain
A banner is one of the most direct ways to make a message visible. It hangs above a storefront, stretches across a fence at an event, or stands behind a table at a trade show. Unlike a poster that waits to be noticed or a flyer that has to be handed out, a banner claims space and announces itself. For a grand opening, a seasonal promotion, a fundraiser, or a community event, a printed banner does the job that no smaller printed piece can do.
Precision Graphics has been serving businesses and organizations in Black Mountain and Western North Carolina since 1998 . We offer banners among our printing solutions , and our customers have trusted us with signs and printed materials for their businesses . We help you choose the right banner material, the right size, and the right finishing so the finished piece does what it is supposed to do: get seen and stay up.
When Banner Printing Makes Sense
Banners serve a specific purpose: large-format visibility for a defined period of time. They are not permanent signage, and they are not small enough to hold in your hand. They are for spaces where people are passing by and need to see something from a distance.
Event promotion and festivals
A banner over an entrance, behind a stage, or along a fence line tells people where to go and what is happening. Festivals, concerts, fundraisers, and community gatherings all use banners to direct attention and identify spaces.
Storefront and grand opening promotion
A banner across a window or above a door announces a sale, a new location, or a grand opening. It is temporary enough to come down after the event but visible enough to stop traffic.
Trade shows and conferences
A banner behind a booth or table gives a business presence in a large hall. It carries the company name, logo, and key message in a format that can be seen from across an aisle.
Seasonal and directional signage
Seasonal sales, holiday hours, parking directions, or temporary wayfinding. Banners can be produced with specific messages for a short window and then stored or replaced.
Sports teams and schools
Team banners, championship recognition, and school event promotion. Banners are often hung in gyms, on fields, or in hallways where they stay visible for a season or longer.
If you need a rigid sign that stands on its own or a poster for a wall, other services may fit better. Banners are specifically for flexible, rollable printed materials that hang or stretch across a space.
Banner Materials and What to Expect
The material of your banner determines how it looks, how it survives the weather, and how it can be installed. The specific options available for your project can be discussed when you request a quote.
Standard vinyl (scrim vinyl)
The most common banner material. It is a reinforced vinyl with a scrim (a grid of threads) inside that gives it strength and tear resistance. Standard weight is typically around 13oz, which is suitable for most indoor and outdoor uses. It prints with vivid colors, can be hemmed and grommeted, and rolls up for storage. This is the default choice for event banners, storefront promotions, and general outdoor use.
Mesh vinyl
A perforated vinyl that allows wind to pass through. This is the material for windy locations—fence lines along open fields, building facades that catch the wind, or outdoor events where a solid banner would act like a sail. Mesh banners are less detailed in print because the perforations reduce resolution, but they stay up where a solid banner might tear or pull loose.
Fabric and display materials
For indoor use where appearance matters more than weather resistance, fabric banners offer a softer look and can be wrinkle-resistant. These are common for trade show backdrops, conference displays, and indoor promotional use where the banner is not exposed to rain or wind.
Finishing options
How a banner is finished determines how it hangs. Grommets are metal rings punched along the edges at intervals, allowing the banner to be tied or bungeed to a frame or fence. Pole pockets are sleeves sewn along the top and bottom edges so a pole or pipe can slide through, holding the banner taut. Hemming is a folded and stitched edge that reinforces the border and prevents fraying. The right finishing depends on how and where the banner will be installed.
If you have a specific material or finishing need in mind, ask when you request a quote. Availability depends on current supply.
Designing a Banner That Works from a Distance
A banner is not a poster. It is not read at arm’s length. The design has to account for distance, movement, and the brief moment someone has to notice it.
The message must be readable at a glance.
At a distance, small text disappears. The main message—the event name, the sale, the business name—should be the largest element. A phone number or website is secondary. A banner crowded with information is a banner that will not be read.
High contrast and bold colors.
Outdoor light washes out low-contrast designs. Dark text on a light background or light text on a dark background separates clearly at a distance. The colors should be chosen for visibility, not subtlety.
Vector artwork is essential.
Logos and text should be supplied as vector files (such as .AI, .EPS, or .PDF) so they scale cleanly to banner size. A low-resolution image that looks fine on a screen will look blurry when enlarged to several feet across.
Bleed and safe margins.
If your design extends to the edge, you need bleed so the color does not stop short when the banner is hemmed or trimmed. Important text should stay inside a safe margin so it is not caught in the hem or grommet line.
Viewing distance determines resolution.
A banner viewed from 10 feet away does not need the same resolution as a poster held in the hand. For large banners viewed from a distance, lower resolution files can be acceptable. Tell us the intended size and viewing distance and we can advise on file requirements.
How the Banner Printing Process Works
You do not need to have every detail decided before you contact us. Here is what the process generally involves.
1. You tell us about the banner and its purpose. What is the banner for? Where will it hang? How large does it need to be? Is it for indoor or outdoor use? Share any design files or describe what you want the banner to say.
2. We discuss size, material, and finishing. The size affects the material choice and the finishing. A large outdoor banner needs a heavier material and appropriate grommet placement. A small indoor banner may work with a lighter fabric. We will help you choose options that fit the intended use.
3. Your artwork is prepared. Vector files work best for banners because they scale cleanly. If you have a print-ready file, we will check that it meets the specifications for the size and finishing you have chosen. If not, we can discuss what adjustments are needed.
4. You approve a proof. Before we print, you will see a proof showing how the banner will look. This is your chance to check the layout, the text size, and the overall readability from a distance.
5. We print, finish, and prepare your order. Once approved, we produce the banner and have it ready for pickup at our shop in Black Mountain.
What Affects Cost and Timeline
Banner pricing depends on several factors. We do not publish fixed prices because every project is different, but these are the considerations that matter:
-
Size — Larger banners use more material and take more production time.
-
Material — Standard vinyl is typically the most economical. Mesh and fabric may cost more.
-
Finishing — Grommets, pole pockets, and hemming add time and cost.
-
Quantity — Multiple banners of the same design can spread setup time.
-
Artwork readiness — A print-ready file moves through production faster than one that needs adjustment.
-
Deadline — If you need a banner by a specific date, let us know early.
When you request a quote, we will give you a clear breakdown based on your specific project and timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common material for banners?
Standard scrim vinyl is the most common choice for both indoor and outdoor banners. It is durable, prints with vivid colors, and can be finished with grommets or pole pockets. For windy locations, mesh vinyl is a better choice because it allows air to pass through.
What is the difference between grommets and pole pockets?
Grommets are metal rings punched along the edge of the banner, used for tying or bungeeing the banner to a frame or fence. Pole pockets are sleeves sewn along the top and bottom so a pole can slide through, holding the banner taut. The right option depends on how you plan to hang the banner.
Can the banner be used outdoors?
Yes. Standard vinyl and mesh materials are suitable for outdoor use. Tell us the intended environment when you request a quote so we can recommend the appropriate material and finishing for weather exposure.
What file format should I send for banner printing?
A print-ready PDF is ideal. AI and EPS files also work well. If you only have a JPEG or PNG, the image may need to be high resolution enough for the intended print size. For large banners viewed from a distance, lower resolution may be acceptable. Tell us the size and viewing distance and we can advise.
How long do outdoor banners last?
The lifespan depends on the material, the weather exposure, and how the banner is installed. Standard vinyl banners can last through a season or longer with proper handling. Mesh banners last longer in windy conditions. Tell us how long you need the banner to stay up and we can recommend a material.
How long does banner printing take?
Turnaround time depends on the size, material, finishing, and our current schedule. When you request a quote, we can give you a realistic timeline based on your project and deadline.
